Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists

Point of View - Adrian Bell

My Life in Behavioural Optometry

I was born and raised on the Gold Coast at a time when the Gold Coast was a relaxed and quiet holiday place. During high school I became blurry in the distance and developed an interest in vision and optometry.

Re: February news
I completed a Science degree at Griffith University in Brisbane and then enrolled at QUT to study optometry. During uni days I worked weekends as a kitchen hand and then a cook and discovered a love of cooking. In my final year of Optometry I met Bev Roberts and Rob and Claire Alexander and started working with them as a student.

Upon graduation I decided to stay in Brisbane to work with Roberts Alexander because the practice offered such an exciting future.  I have been a partner in the practice since 1986.  In 1986 I moved to Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and have been there ever since.

I have spent the last 7 years on the ACBO Board as Vice President and then as President. I am currently the Immediate Past President. In recent years I have developed an interest in lecturing to optometrists about vision and children’s examinations. During that time I have also been writing a column in Australian Optometry about Behavioural Optometry and clinical practice.

In 1987 I married Helen and we enjoyed our common interests of travel and scuba diving.  We now have two children in their teens so weekends tend to revolve around children’s sport but we still enjoy some travelling and planning holidays.  My passion for cooking continues and a great weekend pursuit is an afternoon with friends preparing a meal and enjoying a wine.
