Neuro-Science Applied; Neuro-Development Assessments & Treatments in Optometry
13th & 14th February, 2010 9.00 am to 5.00 pm each day
VENUE: University of NSW School of Optometry Kensington, Sydney
The goal of the program:
To present current research showing that many people with learning disabilities have poorly developed optomotor and/or perceptual skills. The specific nature of these neuro-developmental deficits mean that they are unlikely to be detected by the “traditional”, defect driven, clinical eye examination. Neuro-developmental functional vision delays can compound the presenting symptomatology and may or may not be co-morbid with refractive anomalies, Dyslexia, ADHD, etc. Fortunately, these functional vision deficits are now diagnosable and generally treatable.
DVD presentations from Prof. Burkhart Fischer will be supported by other speakers;
- Prof. David Crewther, of the Brain Science Institute, Swinburne University, Melbourne, is a prolific vision science researcher, often collaborating with his wife, Prof. Sheila Crewther.
- Assoc. Prof. Ed Howell, who in his early days conducted research on the relationships between eye movements and Dyslexia.
- Dr. Lisa Asper of the UNSW will provide a critical analysis of the research from the optomotor laboratory lead by Fischer.
- Graham & Paula Peachey will discuss and demonstrate the clinical application of a turn-key system for neuro-developmental analysis and treatment.
