Kids need help
There are thousands of children and adults in Australia who have problems with vision and learning. Behavioural optometrists provide assessment and care for children with delayed development of vision and learning with the aim of optimising their visual capability. Extended programs of therapy are often prescribed to bring the eyes and brain to a higher level of function. These programs can run for several weeks or sometimes longer, producing life-changing improvements in the patient. However, the programs are not funded by Medicare or private health insurance, and the burden can be considerable for disadvantaged families.
How we help
The Trust provides funding to cover a substantial part of the cost of vision therapy programs. When an ACBO member optometrist identifies a patient who needs vision therapy but lacks the financial capacity to undertake the program, the optometrist can assist the patient to make an application to the Trust for a grant of $1000 which will cover much of the cost of the treatment. The application is then assessed and approved by a dedicated panel of ACBO Fellows, and treatment can usually commence within 2 weeks.
Where the money comes from
Financial support comes from ACBO members who make regular contributions through fund-raising events, optical industry suppliers, and Sue Larter’s family and supporters who give very generously to carry on her life’s work. Substantial seed funding has been received from our sponsor The Brien Holden Vision Institute, and ACBO provides all administration services at no cost to the Trust. Other professional services are provided by Trust supporters on a pro-bono basis, so you can be confident that your donations are not being eaten up in admin fees and hidden bureaucratic expenses – all funds go to the patients who need help.
